Heavy rains and severe weather

Ongoing scattered thunderstorms with locally intense rains will become more widespread today. The atmosphere is extremely saturated and storms have the capability of dropping several inches of rain in some locations which would cause flash flooding. On top of this, the atmosphere is unstable enough that damaging winds and hail in some storms is very likely! Please stay alert today! A strong cold front will approach teh are today and produce some strong to possibly severe storms. The biggest threat will be strong winds, but some risk is there for isolated tornadoes. Please stay tuned too radio and news outlets today.

The SNOW potential is real for late in the Weekend and early next week. So much time to evaluate, but a real threat nonetheless an it could be significant.

SEVERE WEATHER LIKELY AND HEAVY RAINS

If you have been listening to the news and weather you will know many areas are under a tornado watch. I thought I should post and say that this is a higher risk than normal for more serious tornadoes. If there are any they are likely to be isolated, some may be strong. This is not a night to disregard this potential. Severe storms are also firing and producing winds in excess of 70 mph! This is a serious situation and I would ask that you pay attention to your news and radio outlets into the night!

In addition, very heavy rainfall could result in flooding. Remember, water is powerful and can sweep even larger vehicles off the road.

winter Storm Watches posted. Messy Friday into Saturday!

The national weather service has come out with Watches and this looks like a long term icing event starting as snow most areas tomorrow night. The surface cold will mean that the warming taking place aloft will not make it to the surface so Ice will become a dominant type. this will be especially true west of I-95, but MOST areas could see an ice storm before warming.

There are still details to be concerned about. Some models show less precipitation than others. If the less precip pans out, advisory criteria (icing less than .25"would more the likely outcome)

Now, I am thinking that the combination of Ice and Snow will be enough for the storm and we will all need to watch this.

Break down:
I-95 and east - Advisory criteria
I-95 and West - Winter Storm

Snow 1-4" (more western slopes and near PA border)
Ice will be an issue through most of Saturday.

Light Snow tomorrow. Ice Storm Friday!

Light Snow will overspread the northern Half of Virginia and Maryland tomorrow. 1 to as much a 3 inches will fall, from Fredericksburg northward with the near 3" occurring in Maryland. 3-5" is expected in the higher, western facing, mountains.

Friday could be a very slippery day with widespread icing issues and maybe some accumulating snows. This could include most of the area, especially west of I-95. More northern areas could squeeze out enough snow at the onset to be  Winter Storm Warning Criteria for snow (>4") and then many areas could be under a storm warning for Ice!

Details still coming on the later week storm, but look for snow to overspread the area quickly tomorrow morning and last until evening.

Ice troubles continue this morning. Some snow this afternoon!

The ice continues most of the night and has been really a problem for the central piedmont. Be extremely careful especially on secondary streets and walking!

The snow threat this afternoon and evening looks less impressive than I may have thought, but bears watching as models do not get these scenarios correct often. I am not saying we will get more than foretasted, I am saying it is very hard to forecast.

Why was it so much colder? My only real thoughts on this was that the storm that is to the west was not as strong as foretasted which meant the southerly winds were not as strong as thought. These winds would have warmed the atmosphere and switched things to rain yesterday instead of this morning. Also, the secondary low that could  cause some snow this afternoon and evening could affect the scouring of the cold as well.

The week will remain fairly cold with the next threat of wintry weather Sunday night into Tuesday!

Ice isses continue for Piedmont - snow tomorrow into tomorrow night!

The cold air will slowly erode, but it is going to take some time so ice will be an issue until morning! In the morning we may see some plain rain before temperatures bottom out a new coastal low forms. There is a chance for 1 - 4" of snow especially I-95 and eastward and especially north of I-95

This was a very strange set up and I missed it as many did! The situation tomorrow is an evolving one and may surprise us again!

SOME SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN THREAT TODAY

Mainly areas along and Right up against the mountains, especially valley locations, will see a period of light snow today, mixing with and changing to sleet and freezing rain. Accumulations look light but people should be careful because the ground is so cold that it will accumulate and cause trouble when driving. precip will change to rain as the day progresses and should all b rain by this evening. Areas today affected will be just west of I-95 with more accumulations the closer you are to the mountains. Some sleet will mix in at the onset of most precipitation area wide.

Tomorrow night bears some watching as a quick burst of snow may occur over eastern regions! More to come on that!

SNOW ALERT! Snow amounts increasing due to radar coverage

Snowfall for the next system has been upped by the NWS. Many areas west of I-95 have been sent to a Winter Storm Warning. It appears that 4"+ of snow will fall in these regions. Higher amounts will occur near and in the mountains.

Snow is now likely to break out near daybreak in the DC metro area. Snow will fall and become heavy at times west of I-95.

Best I can tell from what i am seeing.

A line from Roanoke, to Harrison burg to Leesburg through middle of Frederick County Maryland will see the most snow.

yes.. I kind of fell asleep at the wheel on this one! Again.. snowfall I think will generally be 3-6" east of the immediate piedmont and 4 - 8" in higher elevations.

This has a very high likelihood too change!

Messy mix probable Thursday and Thursday Night

There is a fairly strong chance that a mix of snow, rain,freezing rain, and sleet will be occurring Thursday and Thursday night.

This is especially true of the Piedmont and mainly west of I -95. Areas of higher elevations could see some accumulating snow before a mix also comes into play there. Not a lot of time so this will be all for now! Please note, that, unlike the last 2 storms, more cold air is already in place before the start of the system.

Not much snow- Potential later this week - brutal cold coming!

Just not cold enough and a storm that will not get its act together until too late! So we will see rain and many places will likely see a mix at some point overnight, but accumulations are not likely. I could see a dusting and I still feel a bit worried about abandoning accumulations, but i am not getting the Forecast Model support. I will need to watch maps today and this evening to be sure I do not have to reverse course, but again, this winter, we have to call off a real snow alert and just make you aware of the possibility for some snow later tonight.

This week will be a busy one with another possible winter system Thursday/Friday and then a brutally cold snow this coming weekend! Highs may stay in the teens to even single digits in the mountains. Systems could be poised for more snowy concerns next week as we stay pretty cold!

So the key here, less chances of snow.. a seasonable weather week, another chance of wintry weather Thursday and Friday followed by the coldest cold of the season!

Snow threat still there for Northern VA and Maryland - Not enthusiastic about a big storm.

Trends on models have been to get this storm together later than would be needed for a larger snowstorm in the area. that being said, some details are obviously not know, and this one has a chance to surprise us. The forecast models have shown a move further east and north with the precipitation. This trend may continue or could be wrong. I am certain some precipitation will fall tomorrow and tomorrow night. I am also fairly certain areas will see snow after some rain for a while. I am not certain if much more than 1  to 3 inches would fall. Areas likely to see snow after a mix would actually be along and just east of I 95 north of Fredericksburg and this would happen tomorrow night. Areas west of I 95 north of Fredericksburg and just up and east of the Piedmont could see a 1 to 2" snow. If models continue to trend unfavorable for heavier precipitation, rain may not turn to snow until right at the end. On the other hand, there may be some more adjustments

So I am not enthusiastic about a big storm, and I am concerned by the trends. They could reverse and we could see more snow so this one is going to be a tough one!

Continued chance of wintry weather Sunday.. details are fuzzy!

There will be a storm and there is the distinct possibility of snow, but the temperatures at the surface may just be warm enough that accumulations become somewhat limited. There may also be a lot of forecast model issues at this time that are causing me to think less of the storm for the time being. The possibilities still run the spectrum from rain most place to more snow, and the lighter or heavier amounts. Now it looks fairly certain there will be some wintry weather in the region, the amounts and impact are way too early to detail.

Next week looks cold and also has another potential snow threat later in the week. We are entering an active winter pattern!

Potentential Significant Winter Storm Sunday into Monday!

Situation will need to be monitored but it appears a strong Nor'easter may be ready to blast the region with Heavy precipitation Sunday into Monday. Preliminary model output does put areas in a risk for significant wintry precipitation. This has shown up several times on models in the past and then changed dramatically so I will continue to monitor!

Temperatures much warmer than thought. Snow threat pretty much over!

The colder air never really established itself so the precipitation today will be rain most areas. Far Northwestern Maryland and the Maryland and Pennsylvania border look to have a mix of sleet in the rain. Do not be surprised most areas in Northern VA and Maryland to see some sleet at the precipitation onset that will quickly change to rain. Snow may mix in with the rain tonight as the precipitation comes to an end. Not looking for any real accumulations.

Northern VA and Maryland: Snow and sleet likely starting tomorrow Afternoon

Snow and sleet likely tomorrow Afternoon into tomorrow evening with some accumulations, especially on grassy areas. A stalled out front will have a wave of low pressure form along it tomorrow and spread a swath of rain into the region. Areas west of I -95, especially from Fredericksburg and north will see this become a mixture of sleet and snow as there will be just enough could air to work with. Further towards the southwest between Roanoke and Charlottesville up to Leesburg, enough precip could fall to give a general 1 - 3" of combination. Areas further north could see 4 -5" especially along the Maryland and Pennsylvania border and then up through much of Pennsylvania. Temps will remain near freezing in areas where the mixture falls so roads will not have much to deal with until tomorrow night.

This coming week we will see temperatures fall to their lowest levels of the season.. but long term we could see an impressive warm up!.

Mixing of sleet and some Frezing rain to mainly rain event next 24 hours

With model runs remaining warm and the storm tracks not favorable for any large winter system in the Central Mid Atlantic region, this storm will do as I stated yesterday. A mix will overspread the northern Virginia and Maryland areas this evening. A gradual change over to rain will occur and a rainy night looks to occur. Closer to the mountains in far northern Virginia up into western Maryland will be the last ones to delay in change over and they should be on the cusp of Winter Storm Warning criteria. Most regions will see a lighter coating of the mix and then just rain. It is possible rain could mix with snow right at the storm's ending tomorrow, but this looks less likely. A very windy and cold day and night ahead for tomorrow!

Sorry for the early hype on this storm only to have it really fizzle out! Parts of New England will see another 12 to 20 inches of snow!

Brief mix followed by rain for most. NWS still sees significant winter event.

NWS and I are not in agreement on this one. Immediate Piedmont of Far NW VA and Western MD I could see hitting Winter Storm Criteria from Ice..but I agree with TinkWx  (see Forum)  on the warmer side of things so I downgraded to a brief mix over to rain most areas. This would be what I see on teh models.

CONSIDERING THE POSSIBILITY THAT MIXED PRECIPITATION COULD EVEN

POTENTIAL FOR AT LEAST 45 MPH GUSTS /IF NOT HIGHER/ TO SPREAD
ACROSS THE CWA...SO WIND HEADLINES MAY BE NECESSARY IN THE FUTURE.
ALSO OF IMPORTANCE IS THAT ANY LOCATION THAT RECEIVES ICE
ACCUMULATION ON TREES AND POWERLINES WILL BE MORE VULNERABLE TO
ICE INDUCED DAMAGE WITH WINDS OF THAT MAGNITUDE.

Winter Storm downgrade to Brief Mix and then RAINY and Windy

There will still be some mixing of ice at the onset of this system, but now, with the main low west of the mountains much stronger and no transfer of true energy to a coastal system as thought, this system now appears to be a majority rain event until you get to Pennsylvania! Yes,, quite a change, but the system will pan out much different than where models started. Western PA, NY and up into New England should get a good amount of snow!

WINTER STORM WILL BE A MIX AND MESS! SNOW LESS> ICE& RAIN MORE

Based on all data now coming in from models and analysis this  system will have a lot of mixing with sleet and freezing rain as well as rain. Areas at most risk for  significant storm situations would be North and west of a Roanoke to Charlottesville to Dulles to Western Baltimore line. Areas along the immediate piedmont parallel to this line up to I-95 will see some icing and some snow, but there will be a lot of mixing.

The net outcome will be sloppy accumulation that should reach storm warning criteria in the mountains and immediate piedmont with potential warning, but more likely advisory criteria along I95 and to the west.

Changes will likely occur, and they may continue to point to more rain. I will keep you posted.

MAJOR WINTER STORM STILL LIKELY! DETAILS FUZZY

Latest models do show some warmer scenarios possible, but there are also some interesting features that make me wonder if they are correct. There will be fluctuations on tracks for a while, but we are nearing a new Model Reliability stage around noon so better analysis is possible then. Still see a major snowstorm for areas in the mountains and the immediate piedmont looks to be in on this one. The I-95 debate will go on whether it will be rain or snow and how far to the west it may end up. Sleet also will be a factor. But what is new for the Mid Atlantic area?

MAJOR WINTER STORM POSSIBLE THIS WEEKEND!

MAJOR WINTER STORM POSSIBLE SATURDAY INTO SUNDAY!

It is all speculation now, but models look very consistent on this storm. Based on the way they look I am putting out this graphic. Highest risk area now for 6"+ and a general area I think will have impacts on the situation. This is all preliminary! A few things that are in play:

• Climatologically speaking it would seem too early for a huge storm east of the mountains. That being said, it could very well happen! If so it will be Historic
• There are missing classic factors that could help the storm. NAO is not negative so concerns about a more inland track and ability of sticking cold air.
• As the storm winds up it will throw warm air in the upper levels which could mean sleet in Eastern regions
• WE ARE STILL MANY HOURS AWAY FROM THE STORM

The track is also really important and impossible to peg at this time. I will update as I can! All for now!

Snow Alert: 1" to 2" of snow. Higher amounts along and west of the mountains

Snow should begin in the early morning far west and overtake the rest of the area by noon. A light snow appears likely with areas that are shaded (under trees and around buildings) getting over an inch of snow and other areas around an inch.

Mountain regions could see 2-4" with some 5 and 6" amounts.

The significance of this event will be the first accumulating snows for the region. Some slick spots will be possible.

SNOW ALERT WEDNESDAY: 1-3" of snow possible mainly on grassy surfaces

Snow is now likely for the northern third of Virginia, all of Maryland, and much of Pennsylvania on Wednesday. A general 1" to 3" may occur, with more north and west of the major cities.

Roads could become slick tomorrow morning during rush hour but will likely improve as the daytime temperatures will be close to or right above freezing. Most accumulation will be on grassy surfaces.

Stay tuned for updates this evening as radar images will start to show the likely magnitude of the snowfall.

Exreme Heat with isolated Severe Storms

Storms have been popping (Especially in the mountains) and they have had plenty of energy to become severe. so Isolated Storms will continue to pop up and they very well could turn severe. Please stay alert and cool! At the time I am writing this in Sterling it is 96 degrees with a heat Index of 107!

 

More widespread storms are likely tomorrow and again, isolated severe storms could form.

TORNADO WATCH ISSUED NORTHERN VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND UNTIL 10 PM!
Due to high shear in the atmosphere (the elements needed for potential tornadoes) and hot conditions, a Tornado watch is in effect until 10 pm this evening! This is an especially important message due to many people not monitoring weather but enjoying outdoor activities! Please be on teh look out for threatening conditions. The watch is for Maryland and Northern Virginia!

Snow Showers to affect northern Areas Overnight

After sunset, as precipitation continues to wrap back around the large low pressure, a mixture of rain and snow showers will turn to snow showers in the Northern areas (Northern Third of Virginia and Maryland). Some showers may be briefly heavy!

 

Stay alert to as snow showers will cause detereorating visibilities at times with high winds it could be rough driving!!

 

High Wind warning stays in effect until 2 am. I am expecting either a continuation or a wind Advisory until tomorrow morning.

Nor'easter on tap for Sunday Into Monday. heavy ains, Winds, Mountain snow, coastal floods and very low tides!

The most important note here is that this is a big system and the rains and high winds will likely be the concern around most of the Mid Atlantic.

Highlights:

1. Areas from the Virginia border and southward could see severe thunderstorms with some tornadoes possible later Saturday and early Sunday.
2.Very heavy rain for the Piedmont of Virginia up the 95 corridor with areas receiving 1-3" in Lower Virginia up to 3"+ amounts in Northeastern Virginia and Eastern Maryland up through Pennsylvania
3. Winds will become more and more of an issue Sunday as the Low gets very strong just off the Delmarva area. This will mean power outages and some structural damage possible.
4. Snows will really start to impact the Mountains Later Sunday into Monday with areas seeing 4-8" with isolated higher elevations seeing 12"+. The other factor here will be the high winds (Wind Warning Criteria likely) causing almost blizzard like conditions and tree damage.
5. Coastal Flooding may be somewhat limited, but Bay side flooding is possible as the storm continues high NW winds for a long period of time. this could also mean very low tides with teh offshore winds!

This storm will bring a blizzard to Interior Northern Pennsylvania up through the Middle of New York and New England! Expect travel issues Sunday and Monday from grounded planes due to high winds and snow!

There is a slight possibility that colder air could eventually wrap into the system and cause a brief change to or mix with snow in the Piedmont of Virginia as well. NO accumulations expected.

4/12/2007 Mid Atlantic Severe Weather Alert! Heavy Rains, High Winds, Severe Storms, Coastal flooding, and SNOW? all possible this weekend!

Serious storm to cause weekend craziness!

A very serious storm system appears to about to take an aim on the Mid Atlantic. Starting tomorrow conditions will all start to come together for a action packed weekend of weather!

The threats:
1. Heavy Rains/Flooding: Would not be surprised to see 3 to 6" of RAIN especially east of I -95
2. Heavy winds: Friday will be breezy and cool. Saturday will see an increase in winds as the storm begins taking shape. Sunday and Monday will be raw and windy with Coastal flooding a real possibility
3. Coastal Flooding: A prolonged time of heavy rains and winds will cause beach erosion and and flooding.  Please stay tuned to  news and radio outlets for your region
4. Severe Storms: The Best threat here would be far Southeastern Virginia and North Carolina. It is a threat though that should be monitored!
5. SNOW? Yes, I would especially be concerned in teh higher elevations, but, if dynamics really become strong, and they very well could, a switch over to all snow could occur for the immediate piedmont up to the 95 corridor before ending!

This is a serious storm and many watches and warnings will be coming out the next few days. Please heed news/radio/and weather outlets for the potential dangerous conditions this weekend!

First time in the last 4 years I am issuing a SNOW alert in April! CRAZY!!!!! This one is an odd one where areas east of 95 from Richmond up to Baltimore. The place that really could get some accumulations....YES.. Accumulations, would really be the eastern Shore! It sounds crazy but areas could see a dusting to as much as 3 inches! Areas along the I-95 would see a potential dusting. This would happen tomorrow night!

Accumulating Snows are possible in Areas West of Washington DC up to Baltimore tomorrow night. Areas could see 1-4" with higher totals in the higher elevations. 

 

This will come after a very heavy rainfall and warm ground temperatures should offset some of the total potentials!

 

This could change, but it may actually become a snowier forecast than a less snowy one!

WInter Weather Alert: 1-3" more likely

After reviewing forecasting models this morning I have lowered my totals to a general 1-3" in the area immediate and just to the west and north of the Washington DC, to Baltimore Maryland line. Some areas may see up to 4", but the general rule will be 1-2 inches with isolated 3 inch amounts. It still will be snowing during the morning commute and the ground has really cooled due to temps in the teens and lower 20s last night. Trace amount north of Charlottesville to Fredericksburg up to the DC metro area

Winter Weather Alert! Winter is not over! 2-4" snows Possible Wednesday!

A moderate snow of 2-4 inches is possible accross Maryland and Far Northern Virginia on Wednesday! 1-3" is possible North of Fredericksburg up to Washington DC. In th DC area 2-4" is possible and maybe up to 3-5" for Maryland. Snow will fall during the Wednesday Morning commute!

DC/MD/VA Icy Mess on Sunday

Sleet and Freezing Rain event for the areas of Harrisonburg to just west of Leesburg up to north of Baltimore. Northern Maryland west of 95 closer to the Frederick Maryland area could see a burst of heavy snow before a mix. 1-3" of slop 20 miles either side of the line discussed, but the heavy snow areas could see 2-4" with isolated 6"

A mix is possible all the way down to Richmond and west to Roanoke with areas just east of teh Mountains seeing the most whereas most areas will see a switch to plain rain along the I-95 corridor . Draw a line from Roanoke up to Charlottesville and straight up to Dulles Airport to BWI and areas east of this should see a change over early enough to be a nuisance. The Immediate valleys of the Apps up to Charlottesville will see enough for storm warning criteria.

SLEETY/ICY MESS for Northern VA up through Marylyand and PA snows

Sorry I have been delayed on posting.. it does appear that a Moderate Icing event will unfold Early Sunday morning. A mixture of first snow, then sleet and freezing rain will visit the region again. There is a possibility of moderate icing! Much about this storm could change and there are hints at some colder air at start which could mean some real snow, but right now, sleet and freezing rain look to be the main precip type. The main locations again will be 20 miles either side of a line from just north of Charlottesville to just west of Leesburg, northeast up to Baltimore County in Maryland stretching up to Philadelphia. Snow is possible North of these areas in Maryland, but especially Pennsylvania. 

 

Much more to be considered and more details tomorrow!

 

Again, this is for Sunday, though freezing drizzle could be occurring Sunday night into Monday morning.

Ice will be a serious issue especially west of the I-95 Corridor. Center line would be just north of Charlottesville to Leesburg to Central Baltimore County Maryland and Northern Hartford. Areas 15 miles either side of this line COULD see a .4 to .8" icing on 2-4" of snow. Further N and W in Maryland and up into Southern PA will see 4-8" with sleet and some Freezing rain. Further north, 12"+

Snow and rain mix is breaking out now in Northern half of Virginia.

Some indications to a wrap around quick snow shot at the end.

Here we go with what appears to be a major Icing Event the majority of which looks like it will be Tuesday Night into Wednesday. For tonight into tomorrow light snow with a general 1-4" accumulation could occur from a Roanoke to Charlttesville to Fredericksburg to Baltimore line and areas 20 miles south and east of that line. Some mixing with rain is likely at onset. Tuesday would be a light snow changing to sleet and even rain for Roanoke to Fredericksburg to south and east of Baltimore. Areas from Charlottesville to Washington DC to Baltimore will see a changeover to sleet and then Freezing rain Tuesday evening as heavier precipitation takes hold. Right now the distinct possibility exists for as much as 3/4" to even 1" of ice! The issue will be.. is it sleet or freezing rain. The further north and west may split totals between sleet and freezing rain, but 20 miles either side of and north of the Charlottesville to Washington DC to Baltimore areas could see a significant Ice Storm!

2/11 FIRST GUESS POSTED

In general, this looks like a serious storm, but most of Virginia and NC will be spared the winter threat. Snow to start in the DC area and down to Carlottesville, followed by a serious Ice threat. N and W of DC and in Western Maryland and north, a serious snow threat.

OF NOTE: Latest model runs seem to imply less snow and more icing or even rain threat! Realize this is a Guess at this point!

 

Will TRY and get a new map out early tomorrow. MAY not be able to provide anything other than analysis beyont that until tomorrow night! By that time, the storm will be on the doorstep!

Things are lining up for a major Winter Storm. Especially  north of Fredericksburg . Areas could see up to a foot and some places more especially in Maryland. MANY factors could change who get the biggest snows and even ice storm possibilities. Best Chances seem to be Washington, DC to Charlottesville and north as well as up to Baltimore and North. Ice could really become an issue in the transition area.

This one is a serious one. Please stay tuned to radio and news outlets.

2/6 Light Snow event tonight will ALL stick!

Light Snow Tonight!

 

A light snow event tonight will drop a 1-3" swath of snow mainly cutting across the central part of Virginia. Light snow will quickly stick to all surfaces though as the ground and roads are so cold. Areas draw a line horizontal from Roanoke to Richmond and then from Charlottesville to Fredericksburg and the areas between and along those lines have the best chance of the 3" totals. Areas north of that line will see totals back off to 1" in Northern VA and a dusting in Maryland, and south will quickly drop to just a dusting.

 

Despite this, the very cold ground could make tomorrow morning the worst winter weather commute we have had this winter! Be careful!

2/1 Winter Weather Threat: Canceled!

MAYBE some pockets in SW Va and western Piedmont south of Charottesville but by and large just spotty showers, some snow, some sleet. This one was not too big (at least up in VA) but was for western NC and SC!

 

Sorry all! Yes, there is another storm possible in about 1 week! we will see! The real story, VERY COLD next week!

2/1 DC/MD/VA Winter Weather Alert

2 waves of precipitation, Snow to a mix, but maybe a good amount of snow for Higher elevations in SW VA

 

North of Roanoke in the Mountains towards SW VA and Northeast up to just SW of Charlottesville could see the most snow with 3-6" shot.

 

Areas along I-95 to 30 miles east, 1-2" then a mix. Precip amounts could approach Winter Storm warning of .25" along I-95 and west up to about Ashland.

 

1-3" of Snow north of here along I-95 up to Baltimore and ares 20 miles either side of I-95. Again, a mix tomorrow night.

 

1-4" west of the I-95 area from Western Loudoun and Frederick Count MD above down to Charlottesville. Closer to 4" in the southern areas of that region, less towards the MD/VA Border.

 

Models are split tonight! Thus the larger ranges. This one has some surprise potential especially looking at the large snow sheild on Radar.

 

Tweaking likely tomorrow, but light snow may overspread most of the area by morning in the south and by noon, Nortehrn VA and by 3pm in Maryland.

1/31/2007 DC/MD/VA Winter Weather Alert

Sloppy Thursday Night Winter weather will pose problems for many.

A storm system will bring snow over the area Thursday but the system will also bring warmer air in over top the cold air that is in place. This warm air will turn most areas from the mountains east over to a mix of sleet and freezing rain. On the latest model runs the precipitation amounts have backed off somewhat so it is possible the ice will not b major up further north, but the North Carolina Piedmont to the mounts into southwestern Virginia up to about Charlottesville and eastward towards the western Suburbs of Richmond could see ice up to the .25" needed for major issues. The ground is cold too so this time the ice will cause serious driving problems. Ice could reach that much up in areas north of these so all motorists will need to be using caution, but a 1-3" snow may precede the ice as well.

More to Come as things hopefully clear up on the forecast models!

1/28 Mid Atlantic Weather Alert: Isolated accumulations

Scattered Snowshowers this afternoon. Chance of a little accumulation possible in the western Mountains and Far northastern Maryland as well as eastern PA and NJ could see isolated accumulating snows in the 1-3" category.  Pinpointing exactly where is very difficult as it will be on a meso scale level. Elsewhere in areas north of Fredericksburg to a Charlottesville in Virginia and all through Maryland may say enough to dust some grassy areas. The system gives me a bit of concern that a few areas could be surprised by more snow than thought so check radars later today!

 

Late next week Storm looking less likely! Pattern will relax just enough to have a mix or snow to rain scenario based on current model readings!

Winter Weather Alert

Snow will Visit Region with 1-3" and mixes as well.

1-3" will fall from a n area north Charlottesville to Fredericksburg line and South of a Frederick county to Baltimore county line. Then a mix will occur from Richmond Southwest to the areas just east of the North Carolina Mountains. It would appear that .10 to .25" of ice is possible, the heaviest in Valleys and areas just east of the Mountains (Up to 40 miles east of Mountains in the Piedmont.)

This is not a huge event, but ice would be an issue for travel. Precip will start later in the morning in the SW and late in the day for the northern parts.

Snow will end as freezing drizzle. Of note, when these storms are ideal some places get some heavier precip so isolated 4-5" totals on snow would not surprise me!

Later next week, POTENTIAL, Really is there for a good snow for parts of the region! I will keep you posted. No time to do a map tonight, MAY have one tomorrow Morning!!!!

Light accumulations of a Mixture of Precip

 

Light Snow, Sleet, and Rain and Freezing Rain will all visit the Regions, but mainly the North Carolina and Southern Virginia regions. The mixture could cause some icing troubles, especially this morning in North Carlina and Southern Virginia as only a small coating of ice could cause havoc. Please stay alert and tuned in to Local News and Radio outlets for updates on your regions weather.

 

There is a possibility of a more significant storm on Sunday Night and again North Carolina and Southern Virginia could be the more problematic spots based on current model read out. This could significantly change between now and Sunday Evening.

Snow Showeres becoming more likely today!

A burst of snow shower activity may accompany a vigorous wave of energy this afternoon! Do not be surprised to see rain and snow showers (Moe likely snow in the north and in higher elevations) this afternoon! It will turn breezy as well!

 

This week there has been a pattern shift and that shift could lead to the first significant snow and ice events starting next week! I will keep you posted!

12/7 First Snow Flakes not out of the Question today

Just wanted to give people a heads up that this afternoon and evening may bring with it some snow showers, especially the further north you are. The western Slopes of the Mountains will see their first significant snows (3-6") and the higher Blue Ridge could see an inch or so.. the areas east of the mountains may also see their first few flakes. Longer term after a quick very cold shot tonight and tomorrow, a warmer/milder trend appears to be coming during next week!

12/1 High Risk of severe weather Today

A very dynamic weather day is on tap which will include a brief period of Showers and Thunderstorms which will contain very gusty winds. The Winds will be topping 60 mph. There is also the threat for Isolated Tornadoes. A High Wind Warning is also in effect for just regular high winds exceeding 50 mph in gusts.

 

Please Stay Alert today as the risk of severe is higher than normal and we will already be dealing with just high winds in general.

11/21 DC/MD/VA Severe Weather Alert

Heavy Rains, highs winds, Mountain Snow?

Very heavy rains, High Winds, and even a taste of mountain snow (maybe) to affct us Tomorrow through Friday.
This is a very slow moving storm that cused snow in South Carolina today.... YES.. SOUTH CAROLINA!!! Charleston reported their earliest snow ever.. even a thundersnow!!! The storm will drop anywhere from 1-2 inches of rain and produce high winds especially east of I-95. The mountains MAY be able to eek a few hours of snow or sleet overnight tonight as the precipoitation makes its way into some colder air.

The weekend looks great after this passes..

MAYBE some colder air later next week! Storm??? Not sure!

A very strong storm will cause Springlike Severe weather tomorrow. This will include strong gusty winds, thunderstorms, and even potential tornadoes! This will end the warmer weather trend we have had. Much colder temps will visit us through the weekend and into early next week.
